This story was publised by and it shows that a man called Everett who was an addict and now has a drug treatment center is feeling like they are setting themselves up for big problems.

When Everett was in high school in the seventies he would skip class to go smoke, he also stole money from his parents so he could support his habbit.  Now he is 43 and he is still an addict and he totally knows that if it weren’t for treatment he would still be using.  Right after Washington’s legalization of marijuana there are those out there that are and not even talking about addiction. They just talking about how they want it easier to get.  They are not looking at the facts that last year marijuana use was accounted for nearly half of youth admission to treatment centers in that state. According to the Substance Abuse mental health Services Administration  there were more than 4,200 young people that were treated in this state for marijuana use and that is even more than any other drug.  So these people are only looking at how much easier it will be available and not how this will affect the rates of young people that will continue to use marijuana and how many more will start using it because it will be so accessible. This may lead to an increase in the need for drug rehabs.

What the Washington law allow is adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana but this has many worried that this increased availability will lead to more underage use.  It seems that individuals who start using marijuana at a young age they are more likely to become dependent on the drug and that is according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Levy, assistant professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, says “It’s frightening.  We’re seeing that the average age of first use has dropped and that more and more kids are using daily.  I think we’re really setting ourselves up for some big problems.”

There are figures that show there is growth in marijuana related problems.  In just one month outpatient admissions for marijuana treatment among Washington state youth increased by 23 percent in the months of August to September. This according to information from the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse.  Well I suppose it is a good idea to look at this situation, especailly if you are another state that wants to legalize marijuana.
