New study from Michigan State University finding that if you engage in many hours worth of media consumption every day or even if you use many different kinds of media all at the same time on a regular basis this could lead to depression and anxiety.  There were 319 individuals that were looked at each one had varying de3grees of social media.  Mark Becker, an assistant professor of psychology at MSA led the study and he and his team made some interesting new discoveries that had not been fully uncovered.  So we all know that it had already been observed in earlier studies that excessive media use just in general can lead to depression especially among teenagers.  However in this new study it was found that using multiple forms of media at the same time can also lead to health problems.  Actions like typing on the computer with the television on in the background or text messaging while also surfing the web are some of the actions that was looked at.  Becker said, “We don’t know whether the median multitasking is causing symptoms of depression and social anxiety or if it’s that people who are depressed and anxious are turning to media multitasking as a form of distraction from their problems.  Whatever the case may be its very important information to have.”

Let’s face it our society has changed a great deal in the last few years.  Social media has been blamed for the erosion of true friendships and their replacement with shallow and oftentimes meaningless online connections.  There is a human need for real connection and it is becoming harder to find.  So what do you suppose happens to humans when they don’t get this connection well some are saying it leads to mental illness.  But wait a minute I don’t get that.

Nicky Ledbetter, CEO of Anxiety UK is saying, “If you are predisposed to anxiety it seems that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed.”  So it seems that there are many people out there that do believe that social media have made their lives worse.  It is also notice that people who are anxious and insecure well they actually do want to sue sites like Facebook and twitter because they find it easier to communicate than face-to-face. Rehab centers can provide people to communicate with someone face-to-face and fix the problem at hand.

So there are many opinions out there that this social media does indeed cause us to be separated from other human contact and that could lead to us having depression and anxiety.  The thing I don’t get is how can a person know that?  Most of them actually think they are OK and in communication with many people.  Well it remains to be seen if this will affect the way we socialize and the way we do business.  Many companies do their business via internet shopping.  As the world turns is what we are dealing with now days.
