Just recently in HealthDay News a study was reported that showed middle-aged people had exhibited a link existing between weakened memory and genetic traits that went along with obesity. So what does that mean? Possibly extra pounds change how our brains work. The interesting thing was that this gene was found in whites but not in blacks. John Speakman who is a professor at the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences said: “could be useful in identifying people who may need more help with declining cognition. Although some people believe obesity is purely a failure of individual will, scientist think genetic makeup has a lot to do with the propensity to gain extra pounds. Studies of twins and families suggest that genes account for about 65 percent of variance in body weight.” Having an obesity problem might require outside help like drug rehabs.
This new study looked into four genetic traits related to a gene that’s thought to play a role in obesity. They looked at 8,400 white and 2,100 black people aged 345 to 64. These people had problems being able to remember words with two of the genetic traits. What’s going on? Speakman said, “It is possible that the gene may affect both weight and memory.” In the big picture this research raises questions about these genetics and their effects on how the brain works.
Many of us who are overweight are absolutely looking for an answer to why we keep eating and gaining weight. We sometime do anything to get slim. Even if it means taking amphetamines to cut our appetite and then maybe become addicted. It seems to go together this genetic situation may lead to taking too much of anything. That way we could avoid taking responsibility for our behaviors.

In a recent incident there were two men and they were moving from Washington state to Ohio so they had to travel through South Dakota and with them was some legally purchased medical marijuana and lo and behold a Highway Patrol officer stopped them and charged them with possession. So what do you suppose they did? They avoided jail time and pleaded guilty to felonies and paid a $2,500 fine. Then five months later that same kind of incident was legalized by the voters in Washington and nearby Colorado. Ok so that means more people will be traveling through South Dakota and risking arrest in a state with some of the toughest possession and sale laws in that area.
It seems that Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender has this opinion that the legalization of marijuana in Colorado will not affect how his officers enforce the state’s drug laws. “We are going to subject them to South Dakota law. I don’t believe it will be a good defense that they came from Colorado or Washington.”
Attorney Matthew Kinney is thinking that more people will be bringing marijuana to or through South Dakota because more than 54 percent of Colorado’s voters approved Amendment 64, and that allows the possession of up to one ounce of pot for anyone 21 or older. It also allows for the sale of pot at retail stores. “If they are going to go through I-90 to go to Minneapolis, they are not going to think about South Dakota law. Marijuana trafficking likely won’t increase due to Colorado’s new law. However, pot smokers may think they are allowed to have the smaller amounts with them or that the chances of getting caught will be slim. For personal use amounts of marijuana, then the answer is yes, the court system is going to be affected.”
The Police chief Allender is expecting smokers to carry it through the state and he is ready to enforce the law. In South Dakota possession of 2 ounces or less is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison and a $2,000 fine. If you are caught with more than 2 ounces it is a felony and you can go to prison for up to 15 years. Get help from Drug rehabs before the problem gets this bad.
What a situation! I suppose it behooves those that can now possess it in these two states to stay clear of South Dakota. It seems like the police Chief there is going to stick to his guns. It looks like the experiment in the Colorado and Washington area will provide a test case and it will be worth watching by South Dakota lawmakers. If South Dakota puts in less restrictive marijuana laws they should do it in a way that fits the culture of the state. Who would have thought there would be some many unanswered questions having to do with this drug called marijuana?

Have you as of lately really observed your kids? What are they doing with their spare time? There are a large number of kids out there that are latch key kids. Yes, the economy is not the greatest so we as parents have to work so we do the best we can for our kids in the afternoon hours after school. Don’t let your questions go unanswered about how to keep up with your children, checkout good websites for more suggestions. There are a large number of kids that are into their video games. I know that is what they spend most of their spare time doing. As a grandmother I see what my grandchildren do after school. They have their head in those games and most of them are war games. I can see that the oldest one is not sociable and he is most comfortable when he is in front of that computer playing those games. That breaks my heart. What happened to the days when boys were boys and went out to play baseball or football in the neighborhood? They also went to the neighborhood playground where they could meet their friends and maybe even a girl. That was our biggest concern. No worry now if you want to know where these kids are after school just go look in front of their TV or computer. They are playing video games. I know this is the case with many teens across the country. If they are not playing games they are in their rooms texting. Social behavior has taken a back burner in the last two years. I personally do not know how to combat this as these methods are being used as baby sitters. For sure someone will come up with a name of a disorder and then they will want to prescribe a drug to fix that. Well, I don’t want that to happen to my grandchildren. How about you? Something can be done about it.

New study from Michigan State University finding that if you engage in many hours worth of media consumption every day or even if you use many different kinds of media all at the same time on a regular basis this could lead to depression and anxiety. There were 319 individuals that were looked at each one had varying de3grees of social media. Mark Becker, an assistant professor of psychology at MSA led the study and he and his team made some interesting new discoveries that had not been fully uncovered. So we all know that it had already been observed in earlier studies that excessive media use just in general can lead to depression especially among teenagers. However in this new study it was found that using multiple forms of media at the same time can also lead to health problems. Actions like typing on the computer with the television on in the background or text messaging while also surfing the web are some of the actions that was looked at. Becker said, “We don’t know whether the median multitasking is causing symptoms of depression and social anxiety or if it’s that people who are depressed and anxious are turning to media multitasking as a form of distraction from their problems. Whatever the case may be its very important information to have.”
Let’s face it our society has changed a great deal in the last few years. Social media has been blamed for the erosion of true friendships and their replacement with shallow and oftentimes meaningless online connections. There is a human need for real connection and it is becoming harder to find. So what do you suppose happens to humans when they don’t get this connection well some are saying it leads to mental illness. But wait a minute I don’t get that.
Nicky Ledbetter, CEO of Anxiety UK is saying, “If you are predisposed to anxiety it seems that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed.” So it seems that there are many people out there that do believe that social media have made their lives worse. It is also notice that people who are anxious and insecure well they actually do want to sue sites like Facebook and twitter because they find it easier to communicate than face-to-face. Rehab centers can provide people to communicate with someone face-to-face and fix the problem at hand.
So there are many opinions out there that this social media does indeed cause us to be separated from other human contact and that could lead to us having depression and anxiety. The thing I don’t get is how can a person know that? Most of them actually think they are OK and in communication with many people. Well it remains to be seen if this will affect the way we socialize and the way we do business. Many companies do their business via internet shopping. As the world turns is what we are dealing with now days.

This story was publised by heraldnet.com and it shows that a man called Everett who was an addict and now has a drug treatment center is feeling like they are setting themselves up for big problems.
When Everett was in high school in the seventies he would skip class to go smoke, he also stole money from his parents so he could support his habbit. Now he is 43 and he is still an addict and he totally knows that if it weren’t for treatment he would still be using. Right after Washington’s legalization of marijuana there are those out there that are and not even talking about addiction. They just talking about how they want it easier to get. They are not looking at the facts that last year marijuana use was accounted for nearly half of youth admission to treatment centers in that state. According to the Substance Abuse mental health Services Administration there were more than 4,200 young people that were treated in this state for marijuana use and that is even more than any other drug. So these people are only looking at how much easier it will be available and not how this will affect the rates of young people that will continue to use marijuana and how many more will start using it because it will be so accessible. This may lead to an increase in the need for drug rehabs.
What the Washington law allow is adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana but this has many worried that this increased availability will lead to more underage use. It seems that individuals who start using marijuana at a young age they are more likely to become dependent on the drug and that is according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Levy, assistant professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, says “It’s frightening. We’re seeing that the average age of first use has dropped and that more and more kids are using daily. I think we’re really setting ourselves up for some big problems.”
There are figures that show there is growth in marijuana related problems. In just one month outpatient admissions for marijuana treatment among Washington state youth increased by 23 percent in the months of August to September. This according to information from the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Well I suppose it is a good idea to look at this situation, especailly if you are another state that wants to legalize marijuana.

What? I can get addicted to my cell phone? Just recently Baylor University did a study and published it in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions. The study author, James Roberts said, “Cell phones are a part of our consumer culture. They are not just a consumer tool, but are used as a status symbol. They’re also eroding our personal relationships.” I can see that is true with children who have cell phones they are in the phone at the dinner table and all other places you can be with them in the family setting. This study that was done found that materialism and impulsiveness drive cell phone addiction. Here are some big words for you….Cell phones are used as part of the conspicuous consumption ritual and also act as a pacifier for the impulsive tendencies of the user, this according to the report. These impulsive tendencies plays an important role in both behavioral and substance addictions. These addictions are very similar. Help with addictions can be found at drug rehab websites.
Studies have shown in the past that young adults send an average of 109.5 text messages a day or about 3,200 texts each month. They receive an additional 113 text messages and check their cell 60 times in a typical day and one average, college students spend about seven hours daily interacting with information and communication technology. So we all look at this information and think this is just youthful nonsense or just a passing fad. But no evidence is showing increasing credence to cell phone addiction and similar behavior addictions. The information for this study comes from self-report surveys of 191 business students at two US Universities. These cell phones are used by about ninety percent of college students and they are not just useful tools they are more important to us than that. These cell phones are accessible at any time and sometimes they are used during class. They give us an “ever expanding array of functions” and that my friend makes their use or over use most likely. If you talk with anyone you will find out that their feelings toward their cell phones is “would be disastrous to their social lives if they lost their Cell Phones”.
This all goes back to behaviors in our lives and it does tie into substance abuse. We do come up with all sorts of interesting things to keep us busy. Whether it is too much alcohol, too much drugs and too much cell phone.

HealthDay News is reporting that underage drinking in the US is still a serious public health issue and that comes from a new federal government report. Information was gathered between 2008 and 2010 from the US National Survey on Drug Use and health and from that information it was found that more than 26 percent of 12 to 20 year olds reported drinking in the month before they were surveyed. Nine percent said they bought their own alcohol. Just a reminder here. Buying and drinking any alcohol under age 21 is a big no in the US. But even though that is the truth rates of underage drinking has increased and it is still unacceptably high. What happens to youngsters when they drink? They can have poor academic performance, sexual assault, injury, and even death.
I do know from having two children that went to college and got involved in drinking that these young people are doing this because it is acceptable among their friends and in fact if they don’t do these actions they are frowned upon. So it is socially acceptable; that is one big reason that underage drinking stays high. Most of these young people don’t even get the concept that this could lead to an addiction and affect their lives in the future. Some of these young people get into serious trouble because of this underage drinking and this kind of record follows them throughout their adult lives. Some cases even lead to drug rehab programs.
Officials can do as much research as they want, the answer will be the same. Young people drink because their friends do and most of them try it and like it. So maybe we need to get at the problem at that point. Help spread the word that it is not so acceptable.

Medline Plus published a report of a study this morning with very interesting information about drunks and emergency rooms. It seems that ambulance workers are not working off a checklist and they may be able to safely reroute drunken patients to detox centers instead of emergency rooms. In 2004 it was estimated that 0.6 percent of all US ER visits were made by people without any problems other than just being drunk. You want to know what those visits cost? About $900 million. WOW! So in Colorado researchers found no serious medical problems being reported after 138 people were sent to a detox center to sleep it off, instead of to an ER. Dr. David Ross, the study’s lead author from Penrose ST. Francis health Services said, “Part of the issue has been – as it is in many busy ER departments – there’s a lot of chronic alcoholics that are brought in by ambulance, police or just come in. Often they are brought in because they have not committed a crime or there is limited space in our detoxification center. So the majority were brought to the ER department. Ambulance Company where I serve as medical director created the checklist with the help of the local detox center and that provided limited medical care by a nurse, and the local hospitals to reduce the number of drunks without medical needs being sent to the local ERs.” Sometimes alcohol abusers are in need of rehab programs.
On this checklist there is 29 yes or no questions, one question is, the patent being cooperative with the ambulance worker’s exam. Is the patient willing to go to the detox center? If the patient said no the ambulance driver bought him to the ER. Well that is good. For one moment there I thought people were being routed to detox even though they did not want to. And when you are drink you can’t actually make a good rational decision. Here is more data on that subject.
Researchers looked at patients they transported between December 2003 and December 2005 wanting to see if any of them ended up having serious medical problems at the detox center. They transported 718 drunks, the detox center received 138 and the local ERs got 580. This is the result; 11 of the patients who were taken to detox were turned away because there was no room, their blood alcohol level exceeded the limit, their family came to pick them up or they were combative. Another 4 patients at the detox center were to the ER because of minor complications including chest and knee pain. No serious complications reported. Ross said, “We really believe that we did not miss anybody with a serious illness and injury that didn’t go the ER as they should have. We tried to estimate how likely we would have been to encounter a serious event. We estimated at most we’d encounter three serious adverse events in the 748.”
Back to my comment on routing someone drunk to detox. I do believe that a person should choose what detox center they go to and they should be given that choice when they are sober.

The National Institute of Health reports that about 1 percent of young people tell about symptoms of abuse or dependence on prescription opioids and they have now estimated that fewer than 12 percent of teens with these problems receive any treatment at all. Dr. Li-Tzy Wu and colleagues at Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania analyzed data from the 2005 to 2008 national Survey on Drug Use and Health so they could learn about treatment use and barriers among teens who abuse prescriptions opioids. They looked at 789 12to 17 year olds who met diagnostic criteria for opioid abuse or dependence, and only 16 to 17 percent had received any substance abuse services or even participated in treatment during the past year. They looked at 999 teens who had one or two dependence symptoms for a disorder 9 percent had gotten help. Help can be found very easily, especially on drug rehab websites.
After looking at all this information they asked teens and the answer they gave were interesting. That did not perceive a need for it. Fewer than 5 percent said they needed help. Of all those spoken to 34 percent said they were not ready to stop using the drugs and 22 percent reported that they did not want others to find out about their problem. They actually did not want neighbors to have negative opinions. 21 percent believed problem could be handled without treatment. Ten percent had cost concerns like their insurance did not cover treatment. Eight percent did not know where to go get treatment. Eight percent did not think treatment would help. Eight percent did not have time. Six percent could not afford it. Four percent felt treatment programs were unavailable. Three percent felt treatment might have negative effect on job. Three percent lacked transportation and two percent felt programs did not have openings.
It is interesting to note that 56 percent of teens are more likely to have received services when they talked to their parents about the dangers of substance abuse. That tells me we need to talk with our teens. Prescription drug abuse is spreading all over this country. It can be one of the most harmful things to our growing teenagers. If you know someone who needs help getting off drugs get them to an inpatient treatment center where they can get natural ways to detox and withdraw. Something can be done about it.

NaturalNews is reporting without question cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the US and the world but wait a minute they also reported that a new study has found that heavy drinkers are at more risk of death than those who smoke.
The study that they reported on was The German Study and in this study they followed 149 alcohol dependent adults for 14 years and here is some interesting fact s they came up with.
Heavy drinking will generally kill more quickly than smoking.
Women are at much greater risk of death than men.
Alcoholics tend to die about 20 years sooner than the general public.
People who are dependent on alcohol generally live shorter loves than do smokers.
Alcohol dependent women suffer death at a rate 4.6 times higher than average.
As for men with alcohol problems, their death rate was nearly double of those who were not dependent. Sometimes drug rehabs are needed to become non-dependent.
Professor Ulrich John of University Medicine Grefswald who led the study said, Clinical data have revealed a higher proportion of individuals who have died than among the general population of the same age. Gender-specific data are rare, even among clinical samples. Furthermore, these studies have two main limitations. First we know that only a minority of AD individuals receive treatment of this disorder, but we lack knowledge about how this selection occurs. Second, we have no evidence about potential effects of specialized alcoholism treatment on mortality among people who had been diagnosed as AD.”
John’s research team looked at 4,070 respondents aged 18-64, of that 153 were later identified as being alcohol dependent. Of those, 149 respondents 119 men and 30 women were then followed over a span of 14 years. John said, “First, we found that annualized death rates were 4.6 fold higher for females and 1.9 fold higher for males compared to the age and gender specific population. Second we found that t6he mean age at death was 60 for females and 58 for males, both of which are about 20 years lower than the mean age at death among the general population. None of those deceased had reached the age of life expectancy. Third, having participated in inpatient AD treatment was not related with longer survival compared to not having taken part in treatment, meaning it did not seem to have a sufficient protective effect against premature death.”
The study does appear to show that drinking could cause early death more frequently than that of smoking. Moral of this story don’t drink or smoke. There is a large portion of the population that does not do any of those activities.
