Flagstaff, Arizona Drug Rehab
With a population of 52,894 and an average of about three people to each household, Flagstaff is the fourth largest city in Arizona. Located in Coconino County, Flagstaff’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau describes the city as being surrounded by natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon. There are dozens of inns, a large number of hotels and motels, conference and meeting venues, more than 200 restaurants, numerous night spots, and in addition, an abundance of cultural, historic, and scientific attractions. Visitors from all over the world come to experience the clean mountain air and enjoy the year-round outdoor recreational opportunities. They also love to see the Western legacy of the pioneer ranchers, railroad builders, and lumbermen.
Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University, the Coconino National Forest, the Riordan Mansion State Park, the Coconino Center for the Arts, Lowell Observatory, many country clubs, museums and parks, and, of course, boasts proximity to the Grand Canyon. Yet with all this going for it, Flagstaff has an ongoing drug problem.
Drugs in Flagstaff
Just recently the Drug Enforcement Agency has reported that Mexican Black Tar heroin is the most commonly used form of heroin in Arizona. The question is how does it get there? Mexican heroin is smuggled into the state through Arizona’s Ports of Entry by pedestrians and within hidden compartments in vehicles. Black Tar, like any other heroin, is highly addictive and, of course, illegal. It is used by millions of addicts around the world who are unable to overcome the urge to continue taking the drug every day of their lives. They are all too sure that if they stop, they will face the horrors of withdrawal.
Right now in Flagstaff there are two different types of methamphetamine. Some is produced locally, and some is produced in Mexico. Mexican-produced heroin is the most common form in the Flagstaff region. This meth is smuggled across the Southwest Border, where it then gets distributed throughout Arizona. Meth that is produced locally comes from independently owned and operated labs that put out small quantities for local consumption. Meth is a white crystalline drug that gives the user a false sense of happiness and well-being along with a rush of self-confidence and symptoms of hyperactivity and increased energy. The meth abuser has a difficult time discontinuing use because an ordinary day is not usually full of such high happiness and well-being. This drug over-exerts users’ bodies, so their health deteriorates quickly.
Marijuana is another drug that is readily available in Flagstaff. Marijuana gives the user a dreamy feeling. Users also experience an increased heart rate and decreased coordination and balance. Most users think that since marijuana is “natural,” it can’t hurt them. JackCentral.com has reported that Interstate 40 is a hotspot for marijuana trafficking in Flagstaff. This report stated that with marijuana harvests in Mexico and northern California hitting their annual peak, more drug transporters are making their way along Flagstaff highways. These reports date from 2008. The increase of drug trafficking was highlighted when officers from the Flagstaff Department of Public Safety stopped three different drivers and discovered at least 58 pounds of marijuana in each car. So, vehicular transport is a main way that marijuana is getting into Flagstaff.
AZFamily.com ran a story in 2008 reporting that the DPS had seized codeine cough medicine when they stopped a rented SUV on interstate 40 at milepost 205 near Flagstaff for a traffic violation. They searched the vehicle and turned up six to seven liters of codeine cough medicine. Police suspected that the medicine was stolen from a pharmacy. Several arrests resulted from this seizure. These reports indicate that codeine is readily available in flagstaff.
Effects on Society
The officials of Flagstaff are well aware of the impact of drugs and alcohol on society as a whole. The health system is overcrowded with addicts that overdose and cannot pay for their hospital stays. It is not okay to just let these addicts go by the wayside. They must be cared for at this time of need. Communities are also hurt by addicts that steal from businesses in order to get their fix. This costs law enforcement agencies a great deal of money, but they must keep the City of Flagstaff safe. What is frustrating for these officials is that when an addict goes to rehab he not only often fails, but once out of rehab he often relapses and gets even worse.
Far-reaching Effects
When a person starts to abuse drugs the first thing that he harms is himself. Most drugs are very damaging to the body, so the abuser inevitably harms his body. He doesn’t get enough rest and he doesn’t eat well. Then the abuser usually starts to affect his family. He lies to them about where he is going and eventually steals from them because he needs more money to pay for his next high. All the while, the abuser is justifying his behavior. This causes more heartache in the family, which cannot figure out why the abuser can’t just stop doing drugs. The abuser then starts to create problems at work; he will often be late and will not work well while on the job. This can escalate into criminal actions like breaking into businesses for money. Law enforcement agencies then have to get involved. The far-reaching effects go on and on. So when an abuser takes that first drink or first drug, he is not taking into account all the damage he is doing.
Types of Treatment Centers for Your Loved One
Arizona has many different types of drug rehab and treatment facilities. These facilities use a variety of techniques and methods. These include the Twelve-Step Program, relapse prevention, one-on-one counseling, drug rehabilitation, behavior modification, support groups, and outpatient drug rehab programs. When a person you love wants to get help, it can be very confusing. There are many attempts being made in Flagstaff to meet the needs of the drug addict, but statistics indicate a low success rate. One thing that residents of Flagstaff need to consider is what they are trying to accomplish when they bring their loved ones to a treatment center. They should remember that the addict got into drugs because he was having problems. His ability to solve these problems was not very good, so he began using drugs as a solution. Each time things got tough for him, he relapsed and went somewhere to use. This could be as covert as him saying, “Well, this day has been too hard, so I’m going to meet the guys at the local pub.” So when you are looking for a treatment center, make sure that you get your loved one to a center that gives the addict some life skills, like communicating. Then they can handle their present problems and the ones they created in the past. An outpatient facility may not be the best solution for the addict. Since he usually has a lot of problems with people and things around him, when he is detoxing and withdrawing the last thing he needs is to be reminded of these disturbances every day. Recovery will proceed then much more smoothly for him when he gets into an inpatient facility. Granted, it may take him away from his home base and jobs for a period of time, but we are talking about getting him clean and sober for the rest of his life. We are helping this being get back into his family and into society as a productive and loving person.
