Young woman addicted to alcoholA word of advice about choosing between alcohol rehabilitation clinics:
If you think your “research” only consists of a few key presses in the google search box and a couple glances at the top listed drug rehab’s website, you’re in for a disappointment.

If you’re going to do that little research on a substance abuse rehabilitation program, then you’re willing to roll the dice not only with your life but with the lives of those around you.  Choosing an alcohol rehabilitation clinic is a decision that you should spend a little time on, even if you, yourself, are the alcoholic needing treatment and you feel pretty desperate.

How to Choose an Alcohol Rehab Clinic

The average industry standard success rate is less than 20%

It isn’t a great idea to go to the phone book and choose the number for “AAA Alcoholics Assistance Hotline – Call Now! 1-800-REHAB” and go to the alcohol treatment facility offered by whoever answers the phone.  That would just be a snap decision – and one that many people make when seeking an alcohol rehab clinic – but it’s not the best way.

The reason for this is that, contrary to popular belief, for every one great alcohol rehab clinic in existence, there are ten that look just like it that don’t work at all.  As a matter of fact, on average, the “industry standard” for drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs is a success rate of less than 20%.  When you specifically look at alcohol rehabs, this statistic drops even further because alcohol is a very widely available and broadly advertised substance.  It’s easy to relapse into abusing it.  While a  street drug abuser can take steps to avoid coming into contact with his former drug of choice, the alcoholic is constantly advertised to and finds himself in life situations as simple as visiting a convenience store or paying for gasoline, where alcohol is readily available behind the counter.  Alcohol is ubiquitous in our present culture.

Most Alcohol Rehabilitation Clinics are Ineffective

2.5 million Americans receive alcohol abuse treatment every year.  Thousands of alcohol abuse centers exist in each state.  It’s an unfortunate fact that the great majority of these centers are ineffective. These rehabs survive not because they get results, but because the public at large as consumers are typically pretty ignorant about what makes a rehab good or bad.

Centers that don’t get results promote the fact that you’ll always be an addict.  “We can help you,” they say, “but it’s really your fault if you’re addicted.  And you’ll always be addicted.”   Basically, these centers aren’t taking responsibility for the condition in which they graduate their clients.

Why 28-day Alcohol Rehab Clinics Don’t Work

Tons of 28 day programs fit into this category.  The reason why twenty-eight day alcohol rehabs are so common, by the way, is because 28 days is the precise amount of time that a typical client is covered by his insurance company.  Twenty-eight day facilities are not constructed around the questions, “How can I best serve the addict?  What does the alcoholic need in order to become fully rehabilitated?”  Rather, 28-day facilities are based on the premise, “How can I bill the most?” So that’s something you should know about such a program before you decide to go with it.  There are actually many rehabs out there, including non-profit organizations that run drug rehab facilities, that actually charge less than a 28-day program although they’ll provide a much longer, open-ended format wherein the alcoholic is complete only when he feels confident in his own stability and ability to prevent himself from relapsing.  This is a big difference from a 28-day program, where they boot him out at the end of the program irregardless of his condition or level of stability.

Broaden The Scope of Your Rehab Search

Another thing to consider when choosing a residential treatment facility is to broaden the scope of your search.  Many people who live in “Anytown, USA,” search for rehabs only in “Anytown, USA.”  Not only are they limiting themselves in terms of the number of rehabs available for consideration, it is more likely than not that there are no acceptable rehab programs anywhere near Anytown, USA.

There is another benefit to broadening your search besides having more options.  One of the major perks of an inpatient alcohol rehab facility is that the alcoholic has the opportunity to “get away from it all.” He gets to clear his head.  He does not have to deal with the people and situations that led to his alcoholism.  He doesn’t have to juggle the lies and the guilt.  He escapes from his usual connections.  This benefit is multiplied in its effectiveness when he leaves, when he goes hundreds of miles away to a different town, a different state or a different coast, even.  U.S. citizens should really consider any inpatient rehab clinic in the U.S. as a potential rehab service provider.  Actually, the further from home, the better.  By definition, residential treatment facilities provide accommodations.  They’re usually quite nice, and you can always get pictures to get an idea of what they look like, but the point is that residential facilities typically provide everything you need.  You shouldn’t be afraid to go away from home to get the help that you need.

Success Rates to Look For in Choosing A Substance Abuse Clinic

Successful programs follow up with their students, and do everything they can to keep them STABLEAnother fact you need to consider before choosing a rehab is that the typical alcohol rehab facility has a success rate under 20%.  In other words, less than 20% of the alcoholics who receive treatment from alcohol rehab facilities stay clean.  That being said, many of the alcohol rehab facilities you might look in to don’t follow up with their patients or try to make any statistical analysis of their own success rate.  The reason for this is because their success rate is not something they want to advertise. If when you ask what their success rate is they are unable to answer, or give a number under 20%, that’s a bad sign. You’ll get little benefit from such a program.

Successful programs follow up with their students and do everything they can to keep them stable once graduated. Because of the nature of addiction, there is no program that can get 100% results. The very best programs in the country can get about three quarters of their graduates to live sober, happy lives without a reversion.  You should be wary if a rehab claims a 100% success rate or makes any sort of guarantee.  Realistically, when you get into one of the better rehab clinics, your chances of recovery are three or four times greater than if you were to attempt to go it on your own. However, if you choose just “any old rehab” or use the “eenie meenie minie moe” method, you might be better off going it on your own.
